Ash's Goings Ons

It's a little blog about what's up with me.

Mirror Image of Yum

Here's a yummy new thing that I tried.  I don't think I have the proper software to mirror image this picture back to normal looking.  Translation: Fire in the Mountains, Whole Grain Champagne Mustard, Catamount Specialties of Vermont.
It's soo good.  So far, I have used it in tuna salad and salad dressing (and eaten it straight off the tip of a knife).  I can't wait to try it on more stuff.

Now what to drink?

As we all know, Portland is full of brilliant beverages.  What are you going to drink with me when I get there?

Fat Straw
First on the list today is the place where I cultivated my taste for bubble tea.  I need to revisit them in part so I can compare my homemade bubble tea to theirs and in part because I haven't figured out how to make my favorite "tea", taro, yet.  They are also one of the most reliable tea latte, another favorite of mine, makers in town.

Nick's Famous Coney Island
If you don't like the root beer here, I cry for you.  I also really like the atmosphere.  The guys who run it are fun, and you can tell they love the place.

Hopworks Urban Brewery
Root beer runner up.  It's nice and spicy, and they get extra points for brewing it themselves (Nick's has some sort of authentic Coney Island supplier).  Late night happy hour with pretzels and mustard is a plus.  Also, I had some of the best service (almost to the point of mind reading) here for one excellent pizza dinner.

Tao of Tea: Original Teahouse
Amazing, extensive tea menu is bound while the (also delicious) food menu is one single-sided page.  It reflects their priorities.  Jasmine pearls, silver needle and kukicha here are excellent, and they certainly know their way around a kombucha culture.  I am anxious to try more.  Also, a great place to take your time eating - the world slows down in here.

Willamette Valley
Wine tasting trip!  Joy!

Tea Chai Té
I have not been overly impressed by this place in the past, but I want to give it another chance.  It's in a great neighborhood to explore, and it's a teahouse.  I have hope for you yet, Tea Chi Té!

Bars and Beers...  Okay, I know that some of you may be shocked to see that this list is conspicuously beer-free.  This is not for lack of wanting beer.  I most certainly do.  I still find Vermont beers lacking in comparison to my last two homes, Boulder and Portland.  Entirely unsurprising, I know.  The thing is that bars are all about the company and/or the music, so I am flexible on this one.  I know some of the things that I want to drink, though: Laurelhurt Brewery's Free Range Red, Cascade Blackberry Red, Roots' Flanders Red, Black Butte (of course)... this list is very red.  I need to remember more dark beers I like.

Booked the Flight. Now Book My Calendar!

I have booked my flight to Portland!  I will be there in mid-July.  Here are the places that I want to eat, so let me know if you want to accompany me!

Bunk Sandwiches
I have been wanting to check this place out since I first heard about it...  Their hours are weird and I never succeeded.  Now it's in print, so it's gotta happen.

The Blue Nile Cafe
There is no Ethiopian food in Vermont.  You can't believe it, can you?  I love this place for multiple reasons.  Hole in the wall charm is off the charts.

Rice Junkies on Hawthorne
It's just so simple.  I like that.

Cartopia, or as I like to call it, The Hipster Food Carts
Avocado and sea salt milk shake, you are mine!  Lovely little food carts.  Actually open late - a Portland rarity.  This one scores high on sentimentality for me as well.  I'm pretty sure my companionship for this one is already established, but going more than once is definitely an option.

Voodoo Doughnut
I need to give them another shot now that I'm not vegan.  Hopefully, I will see what all the fuss is about!

Pad Thai Kitchen
Old neighbor, oh how I miss you!  All the noodle dishes are fantastic and the pumpkin curry...  *sigh*

Edit to add:
Jade
Interesting new thing to try, and in my favorite place: Sellwood!

I'm sure I am forgetting some notables, and I am going to make a separate entry for places that I want to consume beverages.

I'm getting hungry now.

Funk Ending, I Think

Hi all you loyal readers (yes, you who are reading this even though my posting would be generously described as intermittent)!
I have not been posting recently, because I have been in a funk.  At about the same time, the weather turned sour and I messed up my hip.  That left me couch potatoed inside the apartment looking out at the cold gloom for about two weeks.  I can walk now, and the solstice seems to have brought summer weather with it.  Things are looking up!

So, not much to report on, but...
I have really been enjoying my job at the bike shop.  It gives me a lot of time to revel in bike envy and ooh and ahh at adorable little kids.  Both things that I like (especially being covetous, as many of you know).
In other news, I came home yesterday and the pot was mysteriously unstuck from the porch.

Be Careful With Pot...

... or you could permanently affix it to your porch.

Step 1.  Don't put something on the stove and then get distracted by the internet.  Really!  Go check your kitchen RIGHT NOW!

Step 2. Don't take a smokey pot out to put on your fake wood porch.

Step 3.  Don't leave the pot that you didn't put on the porch out there for more than a hot second.

Maureen thinks we can peel it off on the next really hot day.  Friends have suggested I plant flowers in it.  I think I will try peeling, then flower planting in the event of plan A failure.

One year later...

Somehow, these took a year to complete...
